Why We Like It – Samsung U28E590D
The Samsung U28E590D not only provides excellent image quality and a smooth refresh rate, it aims to look good with high pixel density. Compare with another high quality 3D gaming monitor in our ASUS VG27H 3D monitor review. It makes use of its massive screen size by outputting at a high resolution rather than stretching the image. If you want a monitor with 3D capabilities, give our HP 2311gt 23 inch 3D LED monitor review a read too. Or, take a look at the HP EliteDisplay E27i review for a non-gaming monitor. Performance
The Samsung U28E590D performs really well if it’s paired with a PS4 Pro considering the console can output in ultra HD and never goes above 60Hz. Pairing the gaming monitor with a PC isn’t a bad idea either, not with AMD FreeSync available. Should your rig drop below 60Hz, AMD FreeSync matches the frame rate of your GPU to the monitor, providing smoother frame rate and lower input lag.
While the Samsung U28E590D isn’t HDR, its TN panel still outputs an impressive picture quality and 1ms response time. A billion colors are being pumped out of the screen by way of 8-bit and FRC, which is near 10-bit color, translating to breathtaking image quality, much better than the IPS panel on the Acer R240HY. Lighting was brighter, and shadows were more detailed.

Design
The Samsung U28E590D doesn’t look cheap by any means. With its silver and black coloring, the Samsung U28E590D is designed with sharp angles,a screen size of 28-inches, and somewhat thick bezels. Not ideal for multi-display setups, but even less so because of its poor viewing angles. At about 50 degrees the screen will darken and quality drops; a common trait with TN panels.
Looking behind the monitor and you’ll see two HDMI 2.0 ports, a single DisplayPort, and audio out, which will come in handy with it lacking built-in speakers. You’ll also find that it supports VESA mounts. Sadly, the Samsung U28E590D only tils, unlike the Asus VG245H, which is capable of tilt, swivel, pivot, and height adjustment.”
Value
Given the monitor’s performance, the Samsung U28E590D is on the expensive side. For gaming on a console, its game mode does smooth out frames, but most of the features it provides is largely lost on a PS4. It has no use for AMD FreeSync, for example.
The Samsung U28E590D is much better suited as an entry-level 4K gaming monitor for a PC. There is where AMD FreeSync makes sense, and with both HDMI and DisplayPort, you have a few connectivity options available. For 4K gaming and quality UHD pictures, take a look at the LG 27UK650-W, which is far better suited for pushing the PS4 Pro to its limits.

Samsung U28E590D Wrap Up
Given its poor viewing angles and expensive price tag, the Samsung U28E590D is still an impressive display. With near HDR image quality on such a high resolution, it still manages to perform exceptionally well, though this is in part due to AMD FreeSync technology. You won’t be disappointed using the Samsung U28E590D with a PS4, but it’s definitely better suited for a PC.
